Definitions

MEE Middle ear effusion. 
AOM Acute otitis media.  Middle ear effusion with otalgia or systemic symptoms.  Affects 70% of children by age 3 years.
OME Otitis media with effusion.  Middle ear effusion without signs or symptoms of acute infection
Myringitis Erythema of TM without middle ear effusion (often viral or early AOM)
Recurrent AOM At least 3 episodes in 6 months, or 4 episodes in a year
Chronic AOM AOM with duration longer than 2-3 months

Clinical picture

Predisposing conditions

URI, eustachian tube dysfunctio, prematurity, cleft palate, hypertrophied adenoids, immune disorder, respiratory allergies, recurrence of otitis, smoke exposure, absence of breast feeding, sinusitis
