Hodgkins Disease: Nodular Sclerosing

Description This variant is often diagnosed in stage I or II and generally carries a good prognosis.  Cervical, supraclavicular,  and mediastinal lymphadenopathy is common.  Morphologically, the lymph node is partitioned by collagen bands.  Lacunar and classic Reed Sternberg cells are present, as well as some small T cells, histiocytes, granulocytes and plasma cells.  Some necrosis may be present.

Subvariants include "cellular phase" NS with less fibrosis, a synticial variant and a lymphocyte depleted subtype with sheets of RS cells and few lymphocytes.

Frequency This is the most common variant of HD, comprising about 60%-75% of cases in the US.  Males and females are affected with equal frequency.  Onset is commonly in adolescence.
