Hypercoagulable Work-Up

Test to Order Tube Volume Special Considerations
Protein C "function" Blue-top Use 5 mL, fill exactly to line Measure of protein actvity, not protein level.
Protein S "free" Blue-top Use 5 mL, fill exactly to line Send on ice if sample will sit more than 30 minutes.
Anti-thrombin III (measuring % activity) Blue-top Use 5 mL, fill exactly to line If blood clots in tube, obtain subsequent sample by first drawing up anticoagulant into syringe, then replacing fluid into tube, then using now-coated syringe to draw sample.
Anticardiolipin Ab Blue-top Need 6 mL, fill 5 mL tube completely Send on ice to control lab.
Factor V Leiden Mutation (note: not factor V level) Lavender-top (EDTA) if possible, fill 5 mL tube to purple line (minimum = 1 mL)
Prothrombin Mutation Lavender-top (EDTA) if possible, fill 5 mL tube to purple line (minimum = 1 mL)
Homocysteine Level Green-top  2 mL minimum Send on ice
