Guidelines for the Use of Stimate
DDAVP Trials
Every person for whom DDAVP is a potential therapy must have an IV DDAVP
trial.
Stimate
Stimate is DDAVP in an intranasal spray. It is manufactured by Armour
Pharmaceutical Company and costs about $535.00 per bottle. Each bottle
contains 12 adult doses or 25 pediatric doses.
Dose
-
One spray in each nostril (300 mcg) for people more than 50 kg (110 lbs)
-
One spray in a single nostril (150 mcg) for people less than 50 kg.
Side Effects
Common side effects include: facial flushing, headache, sleepiness.
Less commonly, in very young children and in older people, salt and
water metabolism can be a problem, rarely leading to seizures. For
these people, fluid intake should be restricted on the day of treatment.
Patients with high blood pressure or a history of thrombosis should
not use Stimate.
Potential uses of Stimate
The future usefulness of intranasal Stimate as treatment for these kinds
of bleeding episodes will be based on the clinical response to the initial
treatment:
-
epistaxis
-
menorrhagia
-
mouth bleeding
-
minor muscle bleeds
-
other bleeding from mucous membranes
The effectiveness of intranasal Stimate must be proven with a trial before
use in these clinical situations
-
prior to dental work
-
dose after tonsillectomy and one week after surgery
Programs are available whereby patients are not charged for Stimate if
a trial shows no response.
