Electrolytes and Minerals

Provide amounts based on Chem-7, calcium, phosphate and magnesium values
Anions and cations must balance

Phosphorus 1-2 mmol/kg/day
Acetate (see additives)
Sodium 2-4 mEq/kg/day
Potassium 2-4 mEq/kg/day
Magnesium 0.3-0.5 mEq/kg/day
*Calcium 1-4.5 mEq/kg/day (goal = 3)
*Phosphate 1-2 mmol/kg/day (goal = 1.5)

*Calcium and Phosphate should always be given at a ratio of 2 mEq calcium to 1 mmol Phosphate or 1.6:1 in milligrams of calcium and phosphate.  The amino acid cysteine may be added on a prn basis in the amount of 40 mg/g protein to neutralize the TPN solution in order to meet parenteral requirements for calcium and phosphorus for bone accretion.
