NICU Survival Guide

based on the original by Dr. Kevin Clark

This guide is intended to provide general information to assist the resident in the routine management of the term and preterm neonate.  It contains basic information about ventilator management, surfactant administration, and fluid therapy, as well as many other common aspects of neonatal management.  It is designed to be a bedside quick-reference, and therefore does not delve into the physiologic basis for "the numbers".

These guidelines should never take precedence over the clinical judgement of a trained observer.  There will be times when the optimal course of management will differ from these recommendations. Medicine should not be "cookbook" -- therapy should be tailored to the needs of each individual patient.  These guidelines, along with careful clinical assessment, will provide a basis on which to begin therapy.  Good Luck.
